Happy Monday! I can’t believe it’s been an entire week since the Boston Marathon. My leg soreness is mostly gone, but my body is definitely still recuperating. Until Thursday of last week, my quads were SO sore that I had to walk down steps backwards and gingerly lower myself into chairs. So far, I’ve been enjoying my time off from running. I miss it a little bit, but in a positive way – if that makes sense? I really want to give myself plenty of rest and try to heal whatever IT band/hamstring/hip injury I had. Since late January, my feelings toward running have been conflicted, mostly because my injury really HURT (even on easy runs). I’m hoping that after some time off, I’ll be fully healed and ready to enjoy running completely. I’ve been taking some long walks to keep my muscles moving, but have done absolutely no cross-training yet. I asked my mom to mail me my one piece swim suit and goggles, so maybe I’ll hop in the pool later this week! I decided to go to a yoga class on Saturday and it felt really good to stretch and get a little sweaty. However, the chair poses and warrior lunges turned my legs into jell-o! To further aid my body’s post-marathon recovery, I’ve been eating a lot of ice cream. Last week, I visited Haagan Daaz, Tasti D-Lite, and Cold Stone Creamery. And with temperatures in the 80’s this week, I have big plans to hit up Mr. Softee and the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. I really believe that ice cream is good for your soul :-) It makes me happy.
Now, on to today’s main event – JURY DUTY!!! I was less than thrilled when opened up my mailbox and discovered a jury duty summons a few weeks ago. My service began at 8:45am at the courthouse downtown and I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far. It took me about 45 minutes via subway to get to Chambers Street, leaving me enough time for a quick Starbucks visit. I enjoyed one of my first iced coffees of the season. I usually just add soymilk – I think it adds the perfect amount of sweetness.
My favorite part of the day is breakfast! I took this photo last night (no cameras allowed in the courthouse), but most of my breakfast was eaten once I arrived downtown. Coffee #1 (at home, in my Frieda Kahlo mug!), banana w/ Tbs almond butter, 2 hard-boiled eggs, baggie of purple grapes, and an Adora calcium supplement. I have my laptop and free WIFI, so prepare yourself for more frequent Runner’s Kitchen posting. I need something to do to keep me occupied!
I really spend wayyy to much money at Whole Foods. Sigh. I realize many of the things there are expensive, but in my defense, I usually buy things on sale or with coupons. I think I mostly keep shopping there because it makes me feel good as a consumer. The produce section is fresher and has more local options, the meats, seafood, and dairy are all produced in a humane (and usually organic) manner, and products with trans fats and artificial flavorings are not allowed in the store. So yes, the prices are higher, but if you are selective about what you purchase, it does not have to cost an arm and a leg. For example, Kashi cereal is $3.50 at Whole Foods, but $4.50 at the grocery store in my neighborhood. And I think spending a few more dollars on milk without artificial hormones and apples without pesticides is definitely worth it. Ok, ok, off my soap box! I guess I am just trying to justify the large chunk of my budget that goes towards grocery shopping :-)
Here are some goodies I picked up on my most recent Whole Foods shopping trip:
365 Brand Almond Butter – the only ingredient is roasted almonds. I’ve decided that I like this stuff better than Barney Butter. Barney Butter is good, but I don’t think it tastes like almonds.
Dinosaur BBQ Sensuous Slathering Sauce (aka BBQ sauce). It’s locally produced and delicious! I have big plans to use this in a recipe later this week.
Adora milk chocolate disks (calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K supplement) – I want my bones to stay strong and healthy! Also, I will use any excuse to eat chocolate.
